Ottimizzare le immagini per il web è uno dei punti fondamentali per mantenere il vostro sito su Google. Senza questa ottimizzazione il motore di ricerca rischia solo di penalizzarvi.
E noi non vogliamo che Google penalizzi il vostro sito web. Ma ad oggi ci sono talmente tanti formati che è difficile anche scegliere quale sia il migliore.
Per questo ci affidiamo alle regole che vengono fornite direttamente da Big G e a nuove tecniche che permettono di ridurre le dimensioni senza rovinare la qualità della foto.
Quali vantaggi ottengo?
Ottimizzare le immagini per il web aiuta le prestazioni generali del sito web e aiuta anche a formattare meglio una pagina dedicata.
Stando ai dati riportati da HTTP Archive le immagini rappresentano, mediamente, il 22% del peso di una pagina web. Circa un quinto del peso totale, escludendo dunque i testi e i vari codici interni. Dunque, le immagini sono assolutamente la prima cosa da dover migliorare in un sito web.
Ottimizzare un’immagine è più importante che migliorare immediatamente gli script, i font e il codice stesso. Come si può vedere dall’immagine sottostante, una pagina è composta da diversi fattori. Esclusi i video, di cui non tutti i siti sono provvisti, le immagini hanno il maggior peso all’interno di qualsiasi pagina web.
Ottimizzare le pagine, come detto sopra, porta a diversi vantaggi come ad esempio:
- Migliorerà la velocità di caricamento delle pagine. Se la vostra pagina impiegasse troppo tempo per caricare, i visitatori potrebbero stancarsi di aspettare e passare a qualcos’altro.
- Assieme ad una strategia SEO migliorerà il vostro posizionamento. I vostri siti saranno più in alto nei risultati dei motori di ricerca. I file di grandi dimensioni rallentano il sito e i motori di ricerca odiano i siti lenti.
- Google eseguirà la scansione e indicizzerà più velocemente le vostre immagini nelle ricerche per immagini, migliorando l’arrivo da sorgenti organiche.
- La creazione dei backup sarà più veloce.
- File immagine di dimensioni ridotte utilizzano meno larghezza di banda. E reti e browser lo apprezzeranno molto.
- Richiede minore spazio di archiviazione sul server
Ottimizzare le immagini: formati e prestazioni
Il primo punto a cui pensare è che dobbiamo trovare il giusto equilibrio tra dimensione del file e qualità. Grazie a strumenti come Adobe Photoshop, Gimp o Affinity Photo si possono generare file di dimensioni contenute pur mantenendo una buona qualità.
A seguito di questa scelta, dobbiamo tenere in considerazione quale formato del file viene supportato dai vari browser. I browser non sono tutti uguali: Chrome non supporta alcuni formati così come Firefox non né supporta altri. Dobbiamo dunque trovare quale formato può essere visto da più persone possibili.
I migliori formati nel 2021 sono:
- PNG: produce la più alta qualità ma è anche il file con dimensioni maggiori. Non ha mai perdita di qualità.
- JPEG: si può regolare la qualità e possiamo ottenere un ottimo compresso con il peso complessivo
- GIF: utilizza 256 colori e si usa solo per immagini animate. Qualità bassa e peso a volte elevato
- WebP: Al momento è lo standard web riconosciuto. Supportato da tutti i browser, unisce la qualità del PNG con il peso di una JPG ottimizzata.
Vi consiglio dunque di utilizzare quest’ultimo nella creazione di un sito web in quanto, il WebP, è il nuovo standard per tutti i browser. Potete controllare la compatibilità con i vari dispositivi sul sito caniuse.com
Mi hanno consigliato gli SVG: funzionano?
Gli SVG sono delle immagini in formato vettoriale scalabile. Va bene per loghi, icone, testi e immagini molto semplici. Per ottimizzare le immagini però non è completamente utilizzabile.
Ecco alcuni motivi per utilizzarle gli SVG:
- Sono automaticamente ridimensionabili nei browser e negli strumenti di editing
- Google indicizza le SVG come i PNG e le JPG
- Sono di piccole dimensioni
Per quali motivi gli SVG non funzionano per il web:
- Non si possono usare le sfumature: non sono supportate dai browser
- Devono avere delle immagini embeddate che spesso non si allineano
- Richiedono una dimestichezza con il codice sorgente
Consiglio dunque di utilizzare le SVG solo per realizzare alcuni punti del sito mentre di mantenere lo standard attuale, WebP, per tutto il resto del sito web.
